Featured Rider of the Month: Albee Layer
Call us biased, but Albee Layer is one of the most versatile young surfers we've come across in a while. What makes Albee stand out isn't just because he does a lot of different stuff - it's because he does all that different stuff pretty damn well.
Towing Jaws and getting shacked. Busting a backside front flip air that needs a name - The Flayer - because nobody's really made one before.
With talent that shows in 2' mush to 20' barrels, we sat down with Albee to pick his brain on what other different stuff he's into these days.
For more goodies, check out Albee's blog with Matt Meola here: Meola Layer Productions.
Surfline's got Albee pulling a Flayer as their Punt of the Month.
And finally, Chomp Pomper Productions has a pretty awesome Albee vid up on Vimeo.
Hometown: Haiku, Maui
D.O.B: June 9, 1991
Local Spot: Sacs
Sponsors: Xcel, K-Tek Surfboards, Hi-Tech Maui
Local Crew: Matt Meola, Marlon Lewis, Dylan McNeil, Jacob Fitzgerald
Tunes: ROCK ROCK ROCK. And other stuff. Not a huge fan of most rap. And no reggae.
Favorite Wave: The thing.
Travel Highlights: Traveling out, exploring on my Jet ski at home - by far the best waves I've gotten in my life.
Dream Trip and Crew: Shipsterns, or other Ozzie slabs, with Greg Long -type guys and my tow boys - Matt, Marlon - back home.
When I’m not surfing, I'm... Probably on the computer trying to get a main sponsor - ha! Or jumping off cliffs... eating... or just pretending to still be a little grom. Those kind of things.
Best video to amp to?: Hmm. I really like anything with Marzo.
Advantages of growing up on Maui?: You get to surf with some of the best guys in the world - known and underground. Also, there's Jaws - I love that more than anything.
If you were born and raised in Kansas, what would you be doing right now? Building a wave machine, and dating a GORGEOUS girl (or two). Hehe.
If you could take over as front man for any band, past or present, who would it be? It would have to be Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, because I absolutely love screaming his songs in my car. Or maybe Slipknot, 'cause you'd get to wear a mask, and the fans of that band seem to worship Corey Taylor, and it would be sooooo fun to just scream anything you wanted at a million people.
When it's all said and done: I'll have many stories to tell.
Parting Words: Just because it hasn't been done doesn't make it impossible.
